Validation of a Questionnaire for Assessing Adherence to Metered-Dose Inhaler Use in Asthmatic Children
نویسنده
چکیده
Maintenance therapies for asthma are vulnerable to low adherence. Clinicians would benefit from having a validated questionnaire to assess adherence to metered-dose inhaler use in children with asthma. The objective of this study was to design and validate a questionnaire assessing adherence to metered-dose inhaler use, to be filled out by the parents and/or caregivers of children with asthma. The six questions on the Pediatric Inhaler Adherence Questionnaire were obtained from reviewing the literature, from carrying out focus group discussions, and from the researchers’ professional experience. We assessed concurrent criterion validity using canister weight change as the gold standard and also assessed test–retest reliability. The questionnaire was administered to the parents/caregivers of 64 children aged 3.6 2.2 years. Questionnaire scores correlated positively with the absolute value of the difference between 100 and percent taken of prescribed (Spearman correlation coefficient rho 0.42, p 0.001). The sensitivity of the questionnaire in detecting nonadherent patients ranged from 50% to 75%; positive predictive value ranged from 23.1% to 66.7%; and likelihood ratio ranged from 1.5 to 5.5 for the detection of nonadherent patients. The Pediatric Inhaler Adherence Questionnaire is a valid, reliable, quick, inexpensive, and easy-to-use instrument that allows quantitative assessment of metered-dose inhaler adherence in children with asthma, and may be useful across a range of clinical and research settings. Improved asthma control with breath-actuated pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI): the SYSTER survey.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Poor inhalation technique may impact both asthma control and compliance in patients with asthma. The SYSTER survey is therefore aimed at assessing the influence of starting or switching an existing therapy to a breath-actuated pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI, Autohaler) on these parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS 709 French general practitioners (GP) enrolled 2...
متن کاملOnce versus twice daily budesonide metered-dose inhaler in children with mild to moderate asthma: effect on symptoms and bronchial responsiveness.
BACKGROUND Simplifying dosing regimens could improve both adherence and asthma-related morbidity. However, there is little information on the effectiveness of once-daily budesonide, administered through a metered dose inhaler (MDI) plus spacer, on asthma symptoms and pulmonary function in asthmatic children. METHODS The aim of this study was to compare the effect of once-daily versus twice-da...
متن کاملAchieving good adherence to inhaled corticosteroids after weighing canisters of asthmatic children
Background: The metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) currently available for inhaled corticosteroid delivery do not offer an integrated dose counter; therefore, it is difficult to evaluate adherence of patients. The present authors developed a linear regression equation using canister weight to calculate the number of doses actuated from the MDIs. This study aimed to assess medical adherence after the ...
متن کاملبررسی و مقایسه DMFT در کودکان شش تا دوازده سال مبتلا به آسم و سالم در شهر یزد
Introduction: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disorder, which has a high prevalence within preschool children. Since conflicting results have been reported in previous studies regarding DMFT in asthmatic children, the current study aimed to compare DMFT in asthmatic and non-asthmatic children. Methods: The present study was carried out on 46 (6-12 years old) asthmatic children and 47...
متن کاملImprovement of drug delivery with a breath actuated pressurised aerosol for patients with poor inhaler technique.
BACKGROUND The metered dose inhaler is difficult to use correctly, synchronising actuation with inhalation being the most important problem. A breath actuated pressurised inhaler, designed to help patients with poor inhaler technique, was compared with a conventional metered dose inhaler in terms of aerosol deposition and bronchodilator response. METHODS Radioaerosol deposition and bronchodilat...
